Career Shadowing

When I got to UNO, I was really excited because I had been waiting for my job shadowing in a long time, but all I got when i arrived was an answer full of disappointment. Since the person that was working in my field of interest was not there when I got there.

I was really disappointed because I had to wait for my job shadowing for like a week.
This really was a meeting that would change my life since I needed more information about my future job and decide if I was going to give it a try or change to another field of interest.

My day finally came, and as I was walking toward the Durham Science Center I started to really focus on what was I going to ask the person that I was going to meet with.
The meeting went pretty smooth, but the bad thing is that the future career that I was hoping for was not the one I had in mind.

Now, I have to pick another career that will satisfy my wants and my needs.

What are your achievements?

As I was in my school's auditorium receiving my H.O.P.E diploma, I knew I had done what I had always wished to do, shine in front of the other people and be one of the smart ones. My achievements don't only give a posture of me, but also help in school. For example, whenever I have good grades and/or help my school in some way it helps, the school itself knows that by achieving this, I will have a good school record and the school will give me more scholarship opportunities.

What issues matter to you?

One of the issues that matter to me are Global warming. We all know it is caused by Co2 gases and if everybody helped, our planet would survive for another 150 more years but people don't realize just how much we are in danger of the sun's dangerous Ultraviolet rays.
Another issue that matters to me is immigration. George W. Bush knows that without immigrants, this country would just go down economically, and one of the reasons is because of farmer workers. The people working at the fields picking up tomatoes and fruits for less than six dollars an hour are sometimes mistreated by the white men just because those hard working, non-speaking people are immigrants.

Who has been an influence on you?

God and the Virgin Mary are the first ones on this topic. They have not only given me the most amazing parents anyone can have, but they have also helped me in all the stages of my life.
To begin, When I was a little kid, my dad's family disliked us, and they still do. They wished us bad luck in our life. Thanks to them, this didn't happened and they helped us. In Mexico, my parents didn't have a job because the economy was really bad (and it still is), but the almighty together with my virgin didn't let us down; they gave us food and shelter to make it. That is why I came to this country, to be successful in life and to take care of my parents when they are old just like they took care of me when I was a little kid.
To end, my parents' motivations have also been an influence to me since they always tell me to challenge myself so I can see what and what I cannot do. My mom's advices and my dad's help have made me have a 3.6 GPA in school and receive many medals and diplomas for doing so well in school.

Why do you want to attend our college?

UNO is one of the most popular schools in the state of Nebraska. Not only has more than 14,000 students, but it also has my major, which is chemistry. I know other schools have my major but I also want to attend this school because most of my friends go to UNO and it's the closest school to my house.

Sweet Summer

1.) What was most encouraging and motivating to you and why?

* For me, the most encouraging in the summer scholars program was the idea that we would get the credits from the class that I am taking right now. College is very different from high school; instead of going to school everyday, I can go to school in a schedule that suits me. Also, to graduate, it is based in how many credit hours I made while in college. Many careers have different credit hours that one has to complete in order to get the diploma and have your dream career.
The most motivating about the program has to be challenges. Like I said, college is very different from high school and it’s a little harder because of more homework and more time that has to be spent in class, but all that work pays off sooner or later.

2.) What was the most challenging and why?

* Time, why? Because there is more work to do and sometimes even hours are spent in just homework. Some people think that college is supposed to be the most memorable years of our lives and it is true, that is why oneself should take his/her time in it and enjoy activities with friends and family so no pressure is on mind. Another challenge while in the summer scholars was the class itself, I’m not saying it’s extremely hard, but it is more work. The good thing is that most of the work is easy, for example, History 1110 is just based on readings and answering questions, easy huh?

3.) What did you learn about yourself? Describe the experiences that led you to this new information about yourself.

* I learned that I needed to take more time in my class and not just fun with friends because the week in residence, I didn’t pay too much attention to my school work, I’m not saying I didn’t do my homework, I did it but I was just thinking in what was I going to do the rest of the afternoon. Good thing I didn’t get a bad grade in my homework. But school work is something that I knew I needed to take care of the most.

4.) What experiences have made a difference or have had a positive impact on you and why?

* New friends. Many of the new people in the summer scholars program were new to me, but as the weeks passed by, I met new friends and realized that they might have an important impact in my life and my future. Some say that meeting new people on college changes people’s lives and that is true. I met a friend that is like a brother to me and that is just one of the experiences that made am impact in my life.
